We have mounted our SQM-LE to the top end of our 40 cm scope. It
reads continuously, and has been working fine for several months,
without any extra protective covering. Of course it just tells you how
dark it is in the dome when the shutters are closed, but gives a good
sky reading at night when the slit is opened. We're in the process of
determining sky brightness baselines to gage the effectiveness of a new
dark-sky bylaw in the MD of Foothills.

Hello Terry,
There is no reason to add extra protection if you are treating the SQM-LE
the same as your telescope.
One installation I know of had the SQM-LE fixed to the door of a
telescope shed. The door was opened when the telescope was pulled out,
and the meter was used during that time.
If you decide in the future to add an extra covering over the meter,
you can adjust the calibration value quite easily using the supplied Java

In such a circumstance, is there any reason to protect the SQM with an
acrylic dome or other transparent barrier?
